Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need my own skates and equipment to participate?
No! Each skater will be assigned the necessary equipment for the season. It is property of Gliding Stars and is included in the season fee. It is not to leave the rink unless directed to by your instructor. If you own your own equipment it must be approved prior to entering the ice, however the season fee remains the same due to standard ice costs. Volunteer skates are available on a very limited basis.
How safe is skating?
Ice-skating is an activity that does involve some risk of injury. The goals of the program are to develop balance, strength, & coordination. While these skills develop participants should expect some challenges such as falling, but even Olympic ice skaters with tons of experience fall. It is important that every skater wear protective helmets, which we provide, and make sure to use all equipment appropriately. Each skater is partnered with at least one volunteer depending on their individual needs, who is helping them each session. These volunteers go through training and & assisted by our instructors on helping each individual.
Can I make payments on the season fee?
Yes, there is a non-refundable deposit required before entering the ice. There is a weekly or monthly payment plan available with the full season fee required to be received on or before the last skate before the holiday break in December.
What is the minimum age to become a skater and/or volunteer?
Skaters must be at least 18 months old prior to the start of the season. At this young age we strongly recommend a parent or close family member skates as the volunteer with the child. This allows the skater to be comfortable with who is with them so that they can put their effort into learning the on-ice skills. Volunteers must be at least 10 years old. Each volunteer must be able to follow the directions of the instructors and be supportive & encouraging of their skater.
Can my child without disabilities learn to skate with their sibling?
Yes! Siblings, close family, and friends can join and learn to skate alongside a skater with disabilities. We are open to the public and do not require a diagnosis to fully participate in our program. They will be required to complete all registration forms, be fitted for equipment, and provide the same season fee as the skater. They will complete the program and skate in the ice show as one of our skaters. Once they have the skills to skate on their own, maybe they will become one of our valuable volunteers!
How much of my donation directly supports the program?
Gliding Stars is primarily supported by donations from the public, grants, corporate sponsors, fundraising events, and to a limited extent season fees. Presently, 100% of all donations are used to pay for the program’s activities and expenses (ice time, equipment purchases, insurance, etc.) With the help of our hundreds of volunteers and a two-person staff, we strive to provide a safe and focused environment as well as finding innovative ways to provide opportunities for everyone to experience the thrill of ice skating.
